Our Education and Training

Prelude to Training

An introductory sampling of psychoanalytic ideas and their practical applications.

Virtual and In-Person Learning for 2023-24

For the upcoming academic year 2023-2024, PANY will offer some hybrid learning opportunities. These will be determined per program, and will evolve during the admissions season, as we determine our class, community, and faculty needs. The final learning format will be communicated to those enrolled as admissions is finalzed.

As psychoanalysts, we believe in the importance of our work, in some ways especially so during these stressful times; and as hardy New Yorkers, we are committed to maintaining our presence as educators, psychoanalysts, and psychotherapists for the New York City community.

  • Overview

This 16-session program is designed to meet the needs of psychiatry residents, graduate students, and early-career clinicians interested in learning about practice and treatment approaches in psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. The seminars, taught by PANY faculty, have a practical focus, providing participants with an opportunity to hear and discuss clinical material. Most sessions are structured around a key clinical or theoretical concept, including psychodynamic approaches to specialized topics, and may include optional readings. Participants may request a letter of completion upon meeting the requirements at the conclusion of the Prelude program.

The program includes the option of arranging, at no additional cost, two private mentoring sessions with a psychodynamic clinician to help explore your path as a professional in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, social work, and mental health.

One component of the Prelude to Training program is a 6-week seminar series in the Introduction to Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (click here for more information). This course also may be taken as a stand-alone option; click below for more information.
