Topic: Prelude to Training

Examination of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Technique Fundamentals

Transference, countertransference, resistance, neutrality, focus on the unconscious…these are a few of the key elements of a psychodynamic approach to treatment that will be explored in this seminar.  The speaker will use video clips from the HBO series “In Treatment” (2008-2010) in which a psychotherapist meets with patients in a re-enacted version of actual therapeutic material. The group will engage in a rich discussion comparing the technique used by the therapist in the chosen clips with alternative choices of interventions which highlight some of the main tenets of psychodynamic psychotherapy. Those group members already familiar with these concepts will have the opportunity to reflect on the value of adhering to the principles of psychodynamic technique.
