Making a Recommendation for Therapy: What, Why, and How?


We are usually faced with trying to determine what kind of therapy to recommend to our patient: psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, supportive psychotherapy, or another modality altogether? We will learn the factors that determine our choice and how we present our recommendation to the patient.

Learning Objectives.

1. To outline how countertransferential factors keep therapists from recommending psychodynamic or psychoanalytic treatments.
2. To think through how the patient presentation determines the best recommendation approach in order to help the patient agree to a trial psychodynamic or psychoanalytic treatment.
