Timelessness, the Repetition Compulsion and the Problem of “Reversibility” in the Psychoanalytic Treatment of Severely Traumatized Patients


The paper deals with the problem of reversibility and the limits of psychoanalytic psychotherapy in severely traumatized patient. The repetition compulsion is understood as failing reparation of the damaged internal world. To clinical cases are presented to discuss the problem of working through mourning and guilt. Final considerations concern the role of remembering and forgetting as a pathway to psychic development and a healthier integration of the self.

About Our Speaker.

Heinz Weiss, MD

Dr. Heinz Weiss is currently Head of the Medical Department and the Frankfurt Sigmund Freud Institute and Chair of the Education Section of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. Before that, he was head of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine at the Robert-Bosch-Klinik, Stuttgart. As a psychoanalyst, Dr. Weiss is attached to the Germany DPV and is a Guest Member of the British Psychoanalytical Society. He taught at the Universities of Würzburg and Tübingen and was a visiting scientist at the Adult Department of the Tavistock Clinic, London. He has published a number of papers and books, including "Trauma, Guilt and Reparation" (Routledge 2020).

2. Describe the Role of the Transference-Counterftransference Relationship in overcoming obstacles in the clinical treatment of those patients
