Twenty Third C. Philip Wilson, MD, Memorial Lecture "Bodies in Interaction: Finding Patients with Eating Disorders in Spaces Neither Here nor There"

Bodies can be a place where co-construction of relational meanings between patient and analyst occurs. Sometimes patients with eating disorders may need to use our bodies as liminal space—a space between inside and outside, between self and other, between language and silence, between the uncanny and the ordinary and between body to body. Processing this mutual experience allows the patient to experience body-states relationally and to access dissociated meanings, but it also means that the analyst is inevitably pulled into the relational dynamics implicated in the patient’s symptoms. Three case examples of patients with eating disorders are presented from the perspective of the body in liminal or transitional space—one from inside out; the second from outside in, and the third-- in the body to body space between us.

Learning Objectives.

1. Participants will deepen their understanding of how early breaches of trust create disordered eating and disorders of self-regulation in the body and in relatedness to others.

2. Participants will increase their understanding of the impact that patients’ increased access to the analyst’s private life (via Google, social media) has upon the frame--the containing structure of the analytic home— becoming a metaphorically binge of sorts that mirrors their relationship to food from deprivation to excess.

3. Participants will be able to describe how an eating disordered patient’s relationship with food mirrors their relationship to relationships.
