Dr. Jason Wheeler practices psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Manhattan, New York. His professional qualification is as a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist. He is a faculty member of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York.
He currently specializes in couples and individual therapy, particularly for people negotiating midlife crises and transitions and looking to find meaning in midlife and beyond. He gives regular talks at NYU School of Medicine on midlife issues and on clinical approaches to working with pornography.
He was born and raised in England. He has Bachelor’s (Psychology) and Master’s (Philosophy) degrees from British universities, and earned his M.A. in Psychology and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The New School for Social Research in New York City. He is a graduate in Adult Psychoanalysis of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York affiliated with NYU School of Medicine.
During his Ph.D. training he worked at several teaching hospitals in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. He has experience with the full range of psychiatric and psychological problems, and has worked with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. He has worked extensively with diverse groups and is queer, kink, and poly friendly. For several years he taught the Sexuality and Gender course at PANY, and currently teaches on clinical work with Dreams. His first specialty - helping people with severe interpersonal and relationship problems - was developed during five years as a Supervising Psychologist at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital (Mount Sinai West) in Manhattan, where he learned and practiced Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as part of a DBT clinical team.
As well as his work as a full-time therapist, Dr. Wheeler is active in his professional community, helping to train other therapists, writing for professional journals, and presenting at local and national meetings. He is on the faculty of NYU School of Medicine's psychoanalytic Institute (PANY) and is Chair of its Consultation and Treatment Service (reduced fee psychotherapy clinic). Dr. Wheeler also serves on the Editorial Boards of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly and The International Journal of Psychoanalysis, two premier international therapy journals.
